Dr. Eric Gottman, interim associate dean for clinical program, served as master of ceremonies and Dean Paul Luepke welcomed and shared remarks with the over 1,200 in attendance. “It is my honor and privilege to stand before you today” Luepke commented. “I would like the dental and hygiene students to rise. Now place your hands in front of you and look at your hands. These are the hands that are going to heal and transform our patients’ lives. Take care of these hands. Also, you will have many instruments in dentistry and hygiene to choose from, however, the most important instrument is your mind. Keep it sharp, keep learning, and always make decisions that will be the most professional and with the highest integrity” he added. “I am looking forward to going on this journey with you and wish you the best as you continue your clinic portion of instruction. I have great faith that you will be great dentists and hygienists!”

Each class chose influential faculty members to provide keynotes. Professor Andrea Tresner, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Dental Hygiene, was chosen by the dental hygiene class and Dr. Luke Wezeman, Clinical Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Restorative Clinical Sciences, was chosen by the dental class.

Following the remarks each class in unison rose to read their respective Code of Ethics, which were then signed by each class member as they crossed the stage after being presented with a white coat (DDS students) or scrubs (DH students). Students left the ceremony with a reaffirmed dedication to their patients, education, each other, and their profession.

Family and friends had the opportunity to witness their affirmation and celebrated the significant accomplishment in each student’s career.

Supporters from several dental organizations contributed to the ceremony and included: Dr. Roy J. Rinehart Memorial Foundation, Dental Hygienists Alumni Association, Dental Alumni Association; Missouri Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association, Pierre Fauchard Academy Kansas Section; American College of Dentists Kansas Section and the School of Dentistry Office of the Dean.
