Students from the school’s Hispanic Student Dental Association (HSDA) and Asian Pacific Islander Dental Student Association (APIDSA) received dental implant case planning and placement training on July 12th.  Before the hands-on activities, Dr. Solon Kao, Chair, Department of Oral Surgery and Dr. Gustavo Leal, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Restorative Clinical Sciences, lectured on the importance and basics of implants, including case selection, healing protocol, and the restoration of implant crowns.

Participants were then able to simulate placing implants in provided models in the school’s Sim Lab.

Twenty-five students participated and Michelle Bui, DDS Class of 2026 and HSDA officer commented, “it was extremely useful for students to receive specialized hands-on experience with implants and implant placement.”

Special thanks to Straumann Representative Jeff Varland who helped make the event possible, as well Dr. Kao, Dr. Leal, and Dr. Laura Diaz Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Endodontics, who are advisors to the organizations.
