Dr. Timothy Cox, Professor, Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences and Endowed Professor in Dental and Musculoskeletal Tissue Research, has been named a Curators’ Distinguished Professor by the University of Missouri Board of Curators.
This honor recognizes Dr. Cox’s exemplary record of research, teaching, and service, and his outstanding contributions to the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the UM System.
Since joining º£½ÇÂÛ̳ in 2018, Dr. Cox has advanced groundbreaking research in craniofacial genetics and developmental biology. His work has garnered continuous National Institutes of Health support, including completion of a $1.8 million R01 in 2024 and a new five-year NIH grant, funded through 2029, investigating how maternal dietary vitamin A influences cleft lip and palate outcomes.
He has published more than 40 articles since arriving at º£½ÇÂÛ̳, with his work appearing in leading journals such as Nature, Science Advances, and the New England Journal of Medicine, just to name a few. His research has been cited over 10,000 times, placing him in the top tier of investigators worldwide. In addition to NIH funding and publications in leading journals, Dr. Cox was recently recognized by his peers with the David W. Bixler Distinguished Scientist Award, the Society for Craniofacial Genetics & Developmental Biology’s highest scientific honor.
Beyond research, Dr. Cox has made lasting contributions as a mentor and educator, guiding graduate and professional students while teaching across the dental and biomedical sciences curriculum. He has also provided critical service on NIH study sections, editorial boards, and º£½ÇÂÛ̳’s Promotion and Tenure Committees, bringing distinction to our institution at the local, national, and international levels.
