Online Teaching Recertification at º£½ÇÂÛ̳

Online teaching recertification helps faculty continue developing their expertise in digital pedagogy while maintaining compliance with systemwide expectations. At º£½ÇÂÛ̳, recertification options are designed for flexibility, allowing instructors to build on the foundations laid through the 6-week Online Teaching Certification Seminar. Faculty who completed their original certification five or more years ago are required to recertify before their current certification lapses.

Who Can Participate?

Recertification is open to º£½ÇÂÛ̳ faculty, instructors, staff, and graduate students who:

  • Have previously completed an approved online teaching certification program

  • Teach or support online instruction

  • Need to renew certification before the 5-year window expires

º£½ÇÂÛ̳ Recertification Options

º£½ÇÂÛ̳ instructors may complete their recertification through one of two pathways:

A cohort-based, fully online seminar that provides updates on policy, pedagogy, and best practices in online learning. This facilitated option is ideal for instructors who want structure, feedback, and opportunities for reflection alongside peers.

Format: 100% online in Canvas
Length: 3 weeks (asynchronous with scheduled interactions)
Time commitment: Approximately 10 hours

Built on the Sprint mini-course model, the flexible pathway allows instructors to self-enroll and progress at their own pace.

Core Requirement:

  • Teaching Essentials Sprint – integrates Quality Course Review (QCR) principles and emerging trends from Online Teaching Consortium and EDUCAUSE

Plus any two sprints from the following categories:

  • Course Design

  • Assessment

  • Community and Inclusion

Format: Fully online in Canvas
Estimated time to complete: 9 hours total

Prerequisites

To enroll in a recertification option, instructors must have completed initial online teaching certification through one of the following:

  • UM System Online Teaching Certification Seminar

  • ACUE Online Teaching Badge

  • Online in 9

  • Online Teaching Foundations

  • An approved equivalent (via self-assessment)
