Overview of the Quality Course Review (QCR) Process
The Quality Course Review (QCR) process supports faculty in designing, delivering, and continuously improving online and hybrid courses at º£½ÇÂÛ̳. QCR is designed to be developmental and collaborative, providing structured feedback, guidance, and peer support aligned with institutional quality and accessibility standards. Courses that pass the initial check are reviewed using the Online Learning Consortium’s (OLC) Course Review Scorecard.
Faculty are encouraged to begin the QCR process at least one semester before teaching the course and ideally two semesters in advance to allow sufficient time for review, revision, and implementation.
QCR Preparation Help
CAFE offers help with preparing your course for QCR review by a Peer Reviewer or an Instructional Designer. If you have questions about the QCR process or would like help getting ready for review, submit a .
Step 1: Complete the Course Alignment Check
Before submitting a QCR request, faculty complete the table. This document illustrates how:
- Course‑level student learning outcomes (SLOs) align with
- Module‑level learning outcomes (MLOs),
- Formative and summative assessments, and
- Learning materials and instructional activities.
The alignment check helps reviewers understand the intent and structure of the course and serves as the foundation for the review process.
Support is available through the handout and optional .
Step 2: Submit the QCR Request Form
Once the alignment check is complete, faculty submit the with the alignment check attached. Submitting the form initiates the review process and notifies the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) team that the course is ready for an initial check.
Step 3: Initial Readiness Check
The CAFE team reviews the submission to confirm that required materials are complete and that the course is ready to move forward.
- Courses that need readiness criteria are marked ‘Courses have passed an initial readiness check and have been accepted into the formal review queue’ and may be taught while the review continues.
- If a course is not yet ready for review, faculty will receive guidance and support from peer reviewers or instructional designers to prepare the course for review.
Step 4: Quality Course Review
Courses that pass the initial check are reviewed using the Essential and Advanced Design sections of the Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Course Review Scorecard. Reviewers provide structured, criterion-based feedback focused on course design, and student experience.
- If your course meets the required standards, it will be marked as Reviewed and permitted to be taught.
- If revisions are required, you will receive targeted feedback. A Peer Reviewer will assist you and provide support as you address the recommended changes. You will have three weeks to make the revisions. If you need more time, contact the person who reviewed your course or your Peer Reviewer to set a mutually agreed upon deadline.
Step 5: Course Implementation Planning
Following the review, faculty work with a peer reviewer to develop a Course Implementation Plan aligned with Section 3: Course Delivery of the OLC Quality Scorecard. The plan supports effective facilitation, communication strategies, and ongoing student engagement during course delivery.
Step 6: Follow-up and Continuous Improvement
After the course has been taught, a member of the CAFE team will follow up with the instructor to:
- Reflect on the course delivery experience.
- Address questions or challenges.
- Provide support for continuous improvement.
This follow‑up supports sustained course quality over time and aligns with º£½ÇÂÛ̳’s commitment to effective, inclusive, and accessible learning.
Additional Support
The QCR process also supports institutional efforts to meet federal digital accessibility requirements under ADA Title II, which go into effect in April 2026.
Faculty may at any point during the QCR process for additional support.
