Financial Planning and Scholarships

How Should I Prepare For My Study Abroad Journey?

Each program provides students with a cost sheet that estimates the cost of attendance for the program of your choice. Students should prepare well in advance (a year is recommended) of their expected arrival date. Costs are split up into billable and non-billable totals. Billable costs are paid before you go on your trip. Non-billable costs are costs that accumulate during your trip (food, housing, spending money, plane tickets, local travel).

There are many scholarship opportunities for students to explore, from government-sponsored programs to scholarships offered by various private organizations. Below are some resources you can explore.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Students may use 海角论坛 financial aid towards their study abroad costs. The dispersal date for these funds may be after you arrive or after your trip is over. You need to keep this in mind and plan accordingly. The amount of financial aid you receive is determined by the estimated costs on the cost sheet of the program. While some of the fields are filled out for you, some costs (such as flights and housing) need to be filled out by you as accurately as possible. Once your cost sheet is filled out, SAGE will send it to the financial aid office so they can determine how much aid to award to you.

Pell Grant Recipients

Students who receive a federal Pell grant may put it towards costs associated with study abroad. There is also a scholarship available exclusively for Pell grant recipients called the . This scholarship requires a separate application from your program application.

This grant program enables students with limited financial means an opportunity to fulfil their dreams of studying abroad. The Gilman offers up to $5000 to undergraduate students from groups often under-represented in study abroad, who study or intern in non-typical destinations. An additional $3000 stipend is available to recipients who take part in a critical needs language program. Students must meet the requirements below to be eligible for the Gilman:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions)
  • Be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application, or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship
  • Be in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program of at least two weeks for community college students and three weeks for students from four-year institutions, in a single country and eligible for credit from the student’s home institution. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement
  • Apply for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the . However, certain areas within these countries may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) locations; as such, students will not be allowed to travel to these areas. Moreover, students are not eligible to apply for programs in a country with an overall Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisory.
  • Gilman Scholarship recipients can only receive the scholarship once.

Veterans With a GI Bill

Students who have a GI bill available to them may use it for faculty-led programs and other 海角论坛-provided exchange programs that take place at VA-approved universities. Since using your GI Bill can be complex for study abroad, each case needs to be reviewed individually. You can find more detailed information about using your GI Bill for study abroad here.
