Homelessness Assistance

Homeless now and need shelter:

  • Questions to ask: Are you homeless now?  How long will it be until you are homeless?
  • Many community resources require proof of homelessness (not sleeping on the couch of family or friends) and the best way to provide proof is through a shelter.
  • To find an available shelter, call the Homeless Shelter Hotline at (816) 474-4599.
    1. Callers can expect to be told they are full: Keep trying! call starting at 9am, at lunch, before 3pm, and again between 5-6pm.
    2. If a caller is asked if they can be at the shelter by a specified time then a bed is available.  They must be at the shelter by the specified time or the bed will be given to someone else.  Once checked into the shelter they can leave but must be back at the designated time for head counts.
    3. Once in the shelter they will be connected with HUD for a screening to be placed on the city housing list.
    4. Important to note: individuals must have some income and must be able to pay something toward rent if placed in city housing.
