Assistance Animals

Service Animals

A service animal is an animal, typically a dog, that has been trained to assist a person with an accessibility need.  To help keep our campus safe and accessible, students who use a service animal are strongly encouraged to register their animal with Student Accessibility Services through .

  • Service animals can go anywhere the student is allowed to go, unless there is a health or safety risk, such as laboratories and studios.
  • The handler must keep the animal under control and housebroken.
  • The handler is responsible for cleaning up waste and any damage caused by the animal.
  • All animals must meet local vaccination and licensing requirements.

These are the only questions about your service animal you are required to answer:

  1. Is the animal a service animal required due to a disability?
  2. What task has the animal been trained to perform?

Emotional Support Animals

An emotional support animal (ESA) is an animal that provides comfort to alleviate one or more identified symptoms or effects of a person’s disability. At 海角论坛, emotional support animals are only allowed in your residence hall with an accommodation plan. They are not allowed in classrooms, campus buildings or other public areas.

To have an emotional support animal live with you in 海角论坛 housing, you must request an accommodation plan, submit a letter from your doctor or mental health provider and meet with an Access Advisor for an accommodation. The letter must:

  • Confirm that you have a disability
  • Explain how the emotional support animal helps with your condition
